Know the home, know the fault

In a former agricultural market town that grew into a major nineteenth-century mining area, kitchen layouts vary considerably. Older stone properties might have narrow cooking spaces where effective ventilation is crucial to stop cooking smells and moisture settling on cold walls. Modern extractor hoods are fitted to manage this, drawing steam and airborne grease away from the hob. When these units stop pulling air effectively, the kitchen environment quickly becomes uncomfortable, especially when boiling vegetables or frying. Extractor hoods rely on a few key electrical and mechanical components to keep the air clear. A fan motor that refuses to run or has lost its suction power leaves steam billowing around the room. Sometimes the motor still turns but produces a loud rattling or vibrating noise, which points to worn bearings or an unbalanced impeller wheel. Grease filters trap airborne fats before they reach the motor, but if they become saturated, the restricted airflow forces the fan to work harder and reduces extraction. Control switches can also fail, leaving you unable to change the fan speed or turn on the integrated lights. During a visit, we look at the extractor to find out why it is underperforming. We test the fan motor for electrical continuity and mechanical wear, check the control board and switches for faults, and inspect the light fittings.

A vibrating noise usually means the fan motor is struggling. The impeller wheel inside the hood can become unbalanced if grease builds up unevenly on the blades. Alternatively, the motor bearings might be worn out. We inspect the motor assembly to find the source of the vibration and determine if parts need replacing.

When new bulbs do not fix the issue, the fault often lies within the light switch mechanism or the internal wiring. Sometimes the control board that sends power to the lighting circuit has failed. We test the switches and electrical connections to locate the break in the circuit and restore the lighting.

Poor suction with a running motor is frequently caused by blocked grease filters restricting the airflow. If the filters are clean, the fan impeller might be loose on the motor shaft, meaning it does not spin fast enough to draw air. We check the motor, impeller, and filters to resolve the extraction issue.
