Homes in Torquay

Know the home, know the fault

The housing across this part of the Devon coast ranges from large Italianate villas built by wealthy Victorians in areas like the Lincombes, to post-war high-rise flats standing above the harbour. Because the modern urban area grew by merging several small historical settlements together, the kitchens housing electric range cookers vary considerably in size and layout. A large range cooker needs ample space and a dedicated high-capacity electrical circuit. In older properties built during the expansion that followed the arrival of the railway, the wiring might have been updated several times to handle the heavy load drawn by multiple ovens and cooking zones operating at once.

Why range cookers go wrong

What we look for

When an electric range cooker develops a fault, it is usually isolated to a specific compartment. If the main or secondary oven stops heating while the indicator lights remain on, the fan element has likely failed. Grill and hob faults can involve blown heating rings, faulty induction modules, or degraded energy regulators behind the control knobs. Because these appliances draw a significant amount of power, a failing component will sometimes trip the electrics. A short circuit in a cooling fan, a degraded thermostat, or moisture getting into a heating element can all cause the household circuit breaker to activate as soon as a particular oven function is selected. Please note that we only repair electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not work on gas hobs or gas ovens.

When we visit

From your call to repaired

Travelling out from our Plymouth base, we visit homes throughout Torquay and nearby places like Paignton and Brixham to repair electric range cookers. During a visit to a property in a district such as Chelston, we dismantle the appliance in your kitchen to test the internal components. We check the continuity of the heating elements, inspect the wiring loom for heat damage, and test the thermostats to find out why the cooker is malfunctioning. By examining the controls, fans and switches, we can identify the exact part that needs replacing to get the oven, grill or hob working again.

This happens when a component develops an electrical short to earth. In an electric range cooker, the most likely culprit is a split in the main oven heating element or the grill element. A faulty selector switch, a damaged cooling fan, or degraded internal wiring can also cause the household circuit breaker to trip immediately.

If the indicator light comes on and the fan spins but there is no heat, the heating element surrounding the fan has probably failed. If the oven is completely dead, the issue might be a faulty thermostat, a burned out selector switch, or a tripped thermal cut out switch designed to prevent the appliance overheating.

Yes, we repair electric and induction hobs on range cookers. Induction hob faults can include individual cooking zones failing to recognise pans, error codes flashing on the display, or the entire glass top losing power. We test the induction modules, user interface boards, and internal cooling fans to locate the failed component. We do not repair gas hobs.
