Know the home, know the fault

The housing stock along this part of the Devon coast ranges from large Italianate villas built by wealthy Victorians in districts like the Lincombes, to post-war private high-rise flats standing above the harbour cliffs. Because the modern urban area was formed by merging several smaller historical settlements, properties vary significantly in size and layout. In apartments or older properties where utility space is restricted, a combined washer dryer is a practical alternative to housing two separate machines. However, combining two different functions into a single cabinet means these appliances work hard and contain complex internal components packed tightly together. When a washer dryer stops drying, the issue might be a failed heater element, a tripped thermal overload thermostat, or a blocked condenser chamber that prevents moisture from being extracted, leaving clothes damp at the end of a cycle that never seems to finish. Washing faults are just as disruptive. A machine that refuses to fill, drain or spin could have a blocked pump filter, a degraded drive belt or worn motor carbon brushes. Leaks are another issue, sometimes originating from a split door seal or a damaged internal hose. Because the drying cycle relies on a constant flow of cold water to condense steam, water inlet valves can also fail, leading to error codes or control faults. During a visit, we look at the specific symptoms your appliance is showing, whether that involves testing the heating circuit for drying faults, checking the pump and motor for washing failures, or inspecting the door seal for leaks. We trace error codes back to the faulty component, testing sensors and control boards to find the underlying issue. Our service covers electric appliances only, so we do not work on gas cookers or any gas equipment.

A washer dryer uses a condenser system to remove moisture. If the condenser chamber gets blocked with lint, the machine cannot extract water from the warm air, leaving your laundry damp. Alternatively, a failed heater element or a tripped safety thermostat will stop the machine from producing heat in the first place.

The most direct cause of a draining fault is a blockage in the pump filter, which catches coins, buttons and lint before they reach the impeller. If the filter is clear, the drain pump itself might have failed mechanically or electrically. A blocked waste hose can also prevent water from leaving the drum.

Front leaks usually point to a problem with the rubber door seal. Over time, the seal can degrade, tear or become punctured by sharp objects left in pockets. Sometimes, a build-up of dirt or hair on the glass door prevents a watertight seal from forming. We check the seal and door alignment during a visit.
