Homes in Torquay

Know the home, know the fault

The housing across this part of the Devon coast ranges from large Victorian villas with Italianate features in districts like Wellswood to post-war private high-rise flats built above the harbour cliffs. Because the modern urban area was formed by merging several smaller settlements, kitchen layouts vary significantly. In a spacious nineteenth-century house, an electric or induction hob might be set into a large island unit, while a high-rise apartment kitchen could feature a compact ceramic model to maximise worktop space. Whatever the setting, these cooking appliances rely on complex electronics and heating elements that eventually degrade. A ceramic hob uses radiant heating elements beneath toughened glass, which can fail over time, leaving a cooking zone unable to reach the correct temperature. Induction models work differently, using copper coils to create a magnetic field that heats the pan directly. When an induction hob switches off unexpectedly or displays an error code, the issue is usually related to the internal cooling fans, the main control board, or the inverter module. Touch controls that do not respond might point to moisture trapped under the glass or a faulty user interface board. If a hob trips the electrics when turned on, there is likely a dead short in one of the elements or a damaged terminal block. We look at zones or rings that will not heat, investigate touch controls that ignore inputs, and trace the source of error codes. We also inspect hobs that switch off during use or trip the household electrics. Please note that we only repair electric and induction models; we do not work on gas hobs or any other gas appliances.

Induction hobs generate internal heat and rely on cooling fans to protect their electronic components. If a fan fails or the ventilation space under the appliance is blocked, the hob will overheat and shut down as a safety measure. An internal sensor fault or a failing main control board can also cause unexpected shutdowns.

The radiant heating element under the glass is made of coiled resistance wire. Over time, this wire can burn out and break the electrical circuit, stopping the zone from getting hot. Alternatively, the energy regulator or the touch control relay that sends power to that specific ring might have failed and will need replacing.

A hob trips the electrics when there is a short circuit or an earth leak. This is usually caused by a split in a heating element, moisture getting into the internal wiring, or a melted terminal block where the main power cable connects to the appliance. We can test the components to find the short.
