Know the home, know the fault
The housing across Torquay ranges from large Italianate villas constructed by wealthy Victorians in districts like Wellswood, to post-war private high-rise flats built above the harbour. The town expanded significantly after the mid-nineteenth-century railway arrival, absorbing smaller historical settlements into a larger urban area. A fridge needs adequate ventilation to function correctly, and squeezing a large freestanding unit into a tight gap between cabinets can restrict airflow to the condenser coils at the rear. When a compressor has to work harder to dissipate heat, the appliance uses more energy and is more likely to develop a fault. When a fridge fails to maintain a steady temperature, the problem might be a faulty thermostat or a failing compressor. If the interior feels too warm but the motor is running constantly, the door seals might be degraded, allowing cold air to escape. Ice building up on the back wall usually points to a blocked defrost drain or a malfunctioning defrost heater. Water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor is another sign that condensation is not draining away as it should. You might also notice unusual noises, such as a loud clicking sound when the compressor attempts to start, or a continuous hum that never settles down. We travel out to homes across the area, including neighbourhoods like Chelston, to investigate cooling issues. During a visit, we look at fridges that are warm or not cooling evenly, check for water pooling inside or on the floor, and inspect ice building up on the back wall. We also trace the source of constant running, clicking or new noises, and examine faulty lights, thermostats and door seals.

Call 01752 922765Water inside the cabinet usually means the defrost drain is blocked. When condensation forms on the back wall, it is supposed to run down into a small hole and evaporate outside the appliance. If food particles or debris clog this drain, the water has nowhere to go and overflows into the bottom of the fridge.
A loud clicking sound coming from the back of the appliance is a sign that the compressor is struggling to start. The noise is created by the start relay engaging and then tripping off to protect the motor from overheating. This points to a faulty relay, a failing compressor, or an electrical issue.
A fridge motor will run continuously if it cannot reach the target temperature. This happens when warm air enters the cabinet through a split or degraded door seal. It can also be caused by a faulty thermostat failing to signal that the interior is cold enough, or a build-up of dust on the rear condenser coils restricting airflow.
