Know the home, know the fault

Properties along this part of the Devon coast range from large Italianate villas built by wealthy Victorians to post-war private high-rise flats constructed above the harbour and Rock Walk cliffs. The area grew from a collection of small settlements into a seaside resort during the early nineteenth century, meaning housing stock varies considerably. In older properties, washing machines might be installed in narrow kitchens or under stairs, while flats can have them integrated behind cabinet doors. Moving a heavy appliance out for inspection requires a methodical approach, especially when it is tightly fitted into an older alcove or a compact apartment kitchen. When a machine refuses to drain, the issue can lie within the pump system. Coins, hair grips or lint bypass the drum and block the filter, stopping the impeller from turning. If the drum will not spin, the motor brushes might have worn down, or the drive belt could have snapped. Leaks are another fault, originating from a split door seal or a degraded internal hose. A machine that trips the electrics or displays an error code requires a systematic check of the heating element, wiring and control board. Excessive vibration on the spin cycle points towards worn shock absorbers or damaged suspension springs, which allow the drum to bounce around. Whether a machine is located in Chelston or elsewhere on the western side of the bay, we diagnose draining, spinning, filling and heating faults in the home. We look at leaks from seals, hoses and the pump area, as well as door locks and doors that will not open or close. We also investigate machines that trip the electrics, show error codes, or have noisy drums and excessive vibration on spin.

A washing machine will abort the spin cycle if it cannot drain the water first. This happens when the pump filter is blocked by debris like coins or lint, or if the drain hose is kinked. The machine detects the remaining water and stops the cycle to prevent flooding your kitchen.

The door interlock mechanism is designed to stay engaged while water is in the drum. If the machine fails to drain, the door remains locked. Alternatively, the handle mechanism itself might have snapped, or the electronic lock could have failed. Forcing the handle will snap the plastic, so the mechanism must be released from inside.

Leaks from the front of the machine can come from a damaged door seal. Over time, the rubber gasket degrades or gets torn by zips and buttons on clothing. Water will also escape if the glass door is not seating correctly against the seal, or if the pump filter housing at the bottom is loose.
