Know the home, know the fault
In a holiday property, a freestanding electric cooker might sit unused for weeks before being expected to cook meals for a large family group. This intermittent use can highlight underlying issues with the appliance, especially if it is relied upon heavily during peak visiting seasons.
Why electric cookers go wrong
What we look for
When a freestanding cooker develops a fault, the symptoms vary depending on which component has failed. If the oven or grill stops heating but the fan still runs, the heating element has usually failed. Hob rings or zones that refuse to heat up might point to a faulty energy regulator or a damaged switch behind the control knob. Sometimes, turning on a specific function causes the appliance to trip the household electrics. This happens when the insulation inside a heating element breaks down, allowing electrical current to leak to the earth connection. Door faults are also an issue, where worn hinges prevent the oven from closing properly and let heat escape.

When we visit
From your call to repaired
Our engineers travel across south Cornwall to repair domestic appliances in customers' homes around Fowey. We look at the oven and grill heating circuits, check the hob zones, and inspect the controls and switches. We only work on electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs. Once the fault is identified, we dismantle the necessary panels to access the internal wiring and replace the failed parts.

Call 01752 922765This happens when an electrical component develops an earth leak. The most likely cause is a split or degraded oven heating element, which allows moisture to penetrate the casing. When the element heats up, the electrical current shorts to the metal chassis, causing your consumer unit to trip. We test the internal wiring to locate the exact component at fault.
A solid hotplate will not heat if the internal element ring has burned out. Alternatively, the energy regulator behind the control knob might have failed, preventing power from reaching the hob zone. We check the continuity of the hotplate and the switch contacts to determine which part needs replacing. We do not work on gas hobs or gas cookers.
If the appliance is a fan oven, the circular heating element surrounding the fan blade might have failed. The oven will still circulate air, but it will only be warmed slightly by the grill element or residual heat. Worn door hinges or a degraded door seal can also let hot air escape, forcing the cooker to work harder to reach temperature.
