Homes in Newton Abbot

Know the home, know the fault

The housing stock in Newton Abbot reflects its history of rapid Victorian expansion as the home of the South Devon Railway locomotive works. Terraced streets built for railway workers sit alongside attractive villas created for wealthier residents, while newer developments around the outskirts, such as those at Hele Park, aim to add thousands of modern homes. In older terraces, kitchens might be compact, meaning a dishwasher is tucked tightly beneath the worktop. In larger villas or modern houses, freestanding machines are easily accommodated. Wherever the appliance is situated, it requires a level floor to function correctly, as an uneven base can lead to door alignment problems. When a dishwasher fails to drain, water is left standing in the base of the cabinet. This is sometimes caused by a blocked filter, a kinked waste hose behind the kitchen units, or a jammed drain pump. Poor cleaning results point to spray arm problems, where food debris blocks the nozzles and prevents water from circulating. If dishes are left wet at the end of a cycle, there may be a heating fault, which could involve a failed heating element. Leaks can occur if door seals become worn, while error codes and machines that will not start might indicate a problem with the control board or a faulty door interlock switch. During a visit, we look at draining faults, poor cleaning results, heating faults, leaks, error codes and machines that will not start. While we repair a wide range of electric domestic appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Water left standing in the base usually indicates a draining fault. This can happen if the filter is blocked with food debris, the drain pump is jammed, or the waste hose is kinked behind the kitchen units. We look at all these components during a visit to identify why the machine will not drain.

Dishes left wet after a cycle finishes point to a heating fault. A dishwasher relies on a heating element to raise the water temperature for cleaning and to help dry the load afterwards. If the element or the thermostat fails, the machine cannot heat, leaving the contents wet and poorly cleaned.

Leaks from the front of the machine are sometimes caused by worn or damaged door seals. Over time, the rubber seals can degrade or become coated in grease, preventing the door from closing tightly. Another possibility is a faulty spray arm directing water straight at the door, forcing it past the seal.
