Know the home, know the fault

Properties near the River Tavy and the high ground of Dartmoor range from mid nineteenth century miners' houses at the southern edge to modern commuter homes. There is also a distinct Bedford style of architecture seen in many local properties. In a fast-growing residential base, a combined washer dryer is a practical choice. These machines do the work of two separate appliances in a single footprint, useful for households lacking room for a standalone washing machine and a separate tumble dryer. Because they handle both washing and drying cycles, they contain a complex mix of water valves, heating elements and sensors packed into one cabinet. When a washer dryer develops a fault, it can affect just the wash cycle, the drying phase, or both. A machine that stops drying might have a failed heater element, a tripped thermostat or a blocked condenser chamber, leaving clothes damp and causing cycles that never finish. Washing faults include machines not filling with water, failing to drain or refusing to spin. The door seal on a washer dryer degrades over time from exposure to both hot water and hot air, which can lead to leaks down the front of the cabinet. Error codes and control faults can also halt a cycle completely. We repair appliances in customers' homes, travelling out towards places like Whitchurch Down to inspect the machine. During a visit, we look at the control board for error codes, test the drain pump and inspect the door seal for tears. We check the heating elements for both the wash and dry functions, and test the motor brushes if the drum is not spinning. We work on electric appliances, but we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

A washer dryer uses a separate heating element and fan for the drying cycle. If the machine washes normally but leaves clothes wet, the drying heater might have failed, or a thermal overload switch may have tripped. A blocked condenser chamber can also prevent the appliance from removing moisture from the drum during the drying phase.

Leaks from the front of the machine are usually caused by a damaged door seal. The rubber gasket on a washer dryer is exposed to hot water during the wash and hot air during the drying cycle, which causes it to degrade over time. A tear or split in the rubber will allow water to escape down the cabinet.

Error codes indicate that the control board has detected a fault with a specific component. This could be a drain pump that is blocked with debris, a motor that is failing to turn the drum, or a sensor that is not registering the correct water temperature. The code helps identify which part of the washing or drying system needs attention.
