Know the home, know the fault
Properties around this part of West Devon vary from mid-nineteenth century miners' houses to modern builds for commuters working in Plymouth. The local area also features a distinct Bedford style of architecture, with Bedford Cottages found across the settlement. In a dormitory area with a sizeable retired population and a busy tourist trade, kitchens work hard. An electric range cooker is a substantial appliance that handles multiple cooking tasks at once, making it a practical choice for feeding a family or catering for visitors exploring Dartmoor. These large units require a dedicated electrical circuit to power their multiple ovens, grills and hob zones. When an electric range cooker develops a fault, the issue might be isolated to one section or affect the whole machine. A main or secondary oven not heating is a failure pattern that points to a blown fan element or a faulty thermostat. If the appliance trips the electrics, the cause can be a degraded element where the internal insulation has broken down, allowing current to leak to earth. Grill and hob faults also occur, such as a ceramic zone failing to regulate its temperature or an induction ring not recognising pans. Control board failures or worn selector switches will prevent the ovens from turning on, while a seized cooling fan might cause the unit to overheat and shut down. We only repair electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not work on gas cookers or gas hobs. Travelling out towards places like Whitchurch Down, we repair these large appliances directly in your home. During a visit, we look at main or secondary ovens not heating, grill and hob faults, and range cookers that trip the electrics. We also inspect controls, fans and thermostats to find the source of the problem.

Call 01752 922765This happens when the fan oven element fails but the fan motor continues to run. The element is a circular heating coil located behind a panel at the back of the oven cavity. When the internal wire breaks, it stops producing heat, leaving the fan to circulate cold air around the food.
A trip usually indicates an earth fault within the appliance. Heating elements in the ovens or grill degrade over time, causing their outer casing to split. This allows electrical current to leak to the earth wire, which is instantly detected by your consumer unit. A faulty selector switch or damaged wiring can also cause this issue.
Flashing symbols on an induction hob usually mean the appliance cannot detect a suitable pan. Induction technology requires cookware with a magnetic base to complete the circuit and generate heat. If the pan is too small, made of aluminium, or not placed centrally on the zone, the hob will not engage.
