Know the home, know the fault
Properties in this part of West Devon range from mid-nineteenth-century miners' houses to newer builds accommodating a growing population of commuters. The area also has a recognisable Bedford style of architecture, seen in cottages across the district. Inside these varied homes, kitchens are fitted with different types of cooking equipment. Built-in and combination microwaves are integrated into cabinets to save counter space, serving both retired residents and busy families. When a built-in unit stops working, it can disrupt meal preparation, especially for those relying on it for quick cooking after a commute from Plymouth. A microwave involves several specific components that can fail over time. If the appliance runs but does not heat the food, the issue is usually within the high-voltage circuit, such as a faulty magnetron, capacitor or diode. Turntables that will not turn point to a defective synchronous motor under the floor of the cavity, or a broken drive coupling. Door latch and switch faults prevent the unit from operating at all, as safety mechanisms cut the power if the door is not securely closed. Controls and displays can also become unresponsive, which might indicate a failing membrane switch or a problem with the main control board. During a visit, we look at built-in and combination models that have stopped functioning correctly. We examine microwaves that run but do not heat, investigate turntables that will not turn, and check for door latch and switch faults. We also assess unresponsive controls and displays. Our service covers electric cooking appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765When a microwave sounds like it is running normally but the food remains cold, the fault usually lies in the high-voltage components. This could be a failed magnetron, a blown high-voltage diode, or a defective capacitor. These parts generate and regulate the microwave energy required for cooking.
A turntable that will not turn is typically caused by a faulty synchronous motor located beneath the floor of the microwave cavity. Alternatively, the drive coupling that connects the motor to the glass tray might be broken, or the roller ring supporting the tray could be misaligned.
This issue is related to door latch and switch faults. Microwaves have multiple safety interlock switches that must engage in a specific sequence when the door closes. If one of these switches fails or the latch mechanism is damaged, the appliance will not power on or accept commands.
