Know the home, know the fault

Properties in this part of Devon range from different eras, including the Victorian terraced streets originally built to house South Devon Railway locomotive workers. Alongside these are attractive villas constructed for wealthier residents, while modern housing has been added at Hele Park and Whitehill. Further developments are planned at Wolborough Barton and Houghton Barton. Older terraced houses sometimes have narrower kitchen layouts, which can restrict airflow around a freestanding fridge. When a fridge cannot vent heat properly from its condenser coils, the compressor has to run for longer periods to keep the interior cool. A fridge that runs constantly might be struggling with a faulty thermostat or a degraded door seal that lets warm room air seep inside. If the internal temperature fluctuates or feels too warm, the appliance might not be cooling evenly. Another issue is ice building up on the back wall of the fridge compartment. This happens when moisture hits the cold evaporator plate and freezes, which can be caused by a blocked defrost drain or a failing defrost heater. When the drain is blocked, water cannot escape to the evaporation tray above the compressor, leading to water pooling under the salad crisper drawers or leaking onto the floor. During a visit, we look at fridges that are too warm, too cold, noisy or leaking. This includes investigating constant running, clicking sounds or new noises from the compressor relay. We also check for faulty lights, test thermostats and inspect door seals to find out why a fridge or fridge freezer is not cooling properly.

Water pooling under the salad crisper drawers usually points to a blocked defrost drain. When the fridge runs its automatic defrost cycle, moisture melts and should run down the back wall into a small drain hole. If crumbs or food packaging block this hole, the water has nowhere to go and spills inside the cabinet.

A repetitive clicking sound from the back of a fridge is a sign that the compressor is trying to start but failing. This is related to a faulty start relay or an issue with the compressor itself. The clicking is the overload protector cutting in to stop the motor from overheating during the failed start.

Ice building up on the rear internal wall happens when warm air enters the fridge or the defrost system fails. A split door seal allows room-temperature air to seep in, causing excessive condensation that freezes on the cold evaporator plate. A faulty thermostat can also cause the compressor to run without stopping, freezing the moisture.
