Know the home, know the fault

Properties around Church Street, Winner Street and Palace Avenue feature Victorian architecture, while other areas provide a variety of holiday accommodation for visiting tourists. In older houses, kitchens might have been adapted from smaller original rooms, meaning a freestanding or integrated fridge is sometimes positioned close to a heat source like an electric oven or radiator. When an appliance has to work harder to maintain its internal temperature against external heat, the compressor runs for longer periods. Holiday lets also see heavy use during the summer months, with doors being opened constantly by different guests, which tests the door seals and internal thermostats. A fridge that is too warm or not cooling evenly is a typical fault. This happens when the thermostat fails to read the temperature correctly or if the door seals are split, letting warm air inside. That same warm air introduces moisture, which can lead to ice building up on the back wall or water pooling inside the cabinet and eventually leaking onto the floor. If you hear constant running, clicking or new noises, the compressor or its start relay might be struggling to operate. Faulty lights are another issue, sometimes caused by the door switch failing to register when the appliance is open or closed. We look at fridges that are warm, too cold, noisy or leaking. The visit involves checking for water pooling inside or on the floor, inspecting the back wall for ice build-up, and listening for constant running or clicking noises. We also test faulty lights, thermostats and door seals to find out why the appliance is not cooling evenly.

Water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor usually points to a blocked defrost drain. When condensation forms on the back wall, it is supposed to run down into a small hole. If food debris blocks this hole, the water has nowhere to go and builds up under the salad crisper drawers.

A compressor that runs constantly is trying to bring the internal temperature down. This can happen if the door seals are split, allowing cold air to escape. It might also be caused by a faulty thermostat failing to tell the motor to switch off, or a build-up of thick ice insulating the temperature sensor.

A clicking noise from the back of the appliance is normally the start relay attempting to turn the compressor on. If the relay is faulty or the compressor motor is struggling to start, it will click, turn off, and try again a few minutes later. This prevents the fridge from cooling evenly.
