Know the home, know the fault
Properties around the centre retain many buildings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Older houses can have uneven floors, which affects how a fridge sits. If a fridge is not level, the door might not close properly, letting warm air in. Holiday lets experience varied usage, with appliances switched on and off between visits. Family homes, perhaps with children attending the large secondary school that serves the surrounding area, put a different strain on a fridge through constant door opening. When warm air enters a fridge, condensation forms and can freeze on the back wall. A build-up of ice insulates the cooling plate, forcing the compressor to run constantly to maintain the temperature. This constant running can lead to clicking sounds or new noises from the back. If the appliance is too warm or not cooling evenly, the thermostat might be failing to read the internal temperature correctly. Water pooling inside or leaking onto the floor usually points to a blocked defrost drain, where moisture cannot escape and overflows the interior channel. Worn door seals are another reason for temperature fluctuations and excess moisture. When visiting homes near St. Edmund's Church or further out, we look at fridges that are warm, too cold, noisy or leaking. Our visit involves checking for faulty lights, testing thermostats and inspecting door seals. We also investigate water pooling inside, ice building up on the back wall, or appliances that are running constantly. We repair electric appliances in your home, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

When the cooling plate defrosts, the water is supposed to run down a channel and out through a small hole at the back. If food particles block this hole, the water overflows and collects under the salad drawers.
A fridge compressor will run constantly if it struggles to reach the set temperature. This can happen if the door seals are split, letting warm air inside. It might also be caused by a thick layer of ice on the back wall acting as insulation, or a faulty thermostat failing to signal that the appliance is cold enough.
Ice builds up on the back wall when warm air enters the cabinet and condenses. This moisture freezes against the cooling plate. Worn door seals are a primary cause, as they allow a continuous draft of room-temperature air into the appliance. A failing thermostat can also cause the fridge to overcool and freeze normal condensation.
