Know the home, know the fault

The historic streets around Church Street and Palace Avenue feature fine examples of Victorian architecture, where older kitchens might have been updated to include modern cooking technology. Across Paignton, a coastal settlement on the shores of Tor Bay, the local economy relies heavily on tourism and family holidays. This means there is a wide selection of holiday accommodation alongside permanent residences. In both private homes and holiday lets, electric and induction hobs see heavy use when preparing meals for large families or visiting guests. A sudden failure can disrupt cooking plans, especially when catering for a full house. When a hob breaks down, the symptoms vary depending on the underlying technology. On ceramic models, a ring that will not heat is sometimes caused by a failed heating element or a faulty energy regulator. Induction variants use electromagnets to heat the pan directly, and a failure here might present as an error code on the display or a unit that switches off unexpectedly. Touch controls that do not respond can be the result of moisture getting under the glass or a malfunctioning main control board. Another issue is a hob that trips the electrics, which usually points to a dead short within the internal wiring or a blown component. Please note that we only repair electric and induction cooking appliances, and do not work on gas hobs. During a visit, we look at the power supply, test the individual heating zones, and inspect the internal electronics to find out why the appliance is failing. Whether the touch sensors are ignoring inputs or the entire unit has lost power, we dismantle the casing to test the circuits.

Touch controls can stop responding if moisture or grease gets trapped between the glass surface and the sensor board underneath. It can also happen if the control module itself develops an electronic fault. We dismantle the hob to inspect the sensors and the main circuit board to locate the exact failure.

A hob will trip your electrics if there is a dead short somewhere in the internal wiring or a component has blown. This happens when insulation degrades or water spills breach the casing. We test the terminal block, the heating elements and the wiring harness to find where the short is located.

When a single ceramic zone fails to heat, the most likely cause is a break in the heating element itself. Alternatively, the energy regulator or the switch that sends power to that specific ring might be faulty. We check the continuity of the element and the switch to identify the broken part.
