Know the home, know the fault

Paignton is a coastal settlement located on the shores of Tor Bay. The town originally developed from a small fishing community and saw significant growth after a new harbour was constructed in the mid nineteenth century. Today, the local economy is heavily dependent on the tourism industry and family holidays, meaning the area contains a wide selection of holiday accommodation for visiting tourists. Properties range from the older central streets featuring many properties built in the Victorian architectural style, to homes in nearby villages that the town eventually absorbed as it expanded. In family homes and holiday lets alike, a tumble dryer works hard processing heavy loads of towels and bedding. When a dryer is loaded with heavy, wet fabrics, the drive belt and motor take a lot of strain. A snapped belt means the motor will run but the drum will not turn. If the machine turns but does not heat, the issue is sometimes a tripped thermostat or a failed heating element. Condenser models develop faults with the water container or pump system, causing the cycle to stop early because the machine registers the tank as full. Noisy running points to worn support rollers or bearings, which degrade over time with heavy loads. When we visit to repair a tumble dryer, we look at machines that run but do not heat, drums that will not turn, and units that stop mid-cycle or will not start at all. We also investigate condenser and water container faults, as well as noisy running. We repair the appliance directly in your home.

A tumble dryer that turns without heating usually has a problem with the heating element or a tripped safety thermostat. The thermostat cuts power to the element if the machine gets too hot, which happens when airflow is restricted by a blocked filter or vent. We test these components to find the fault.

The most likely cause for a drum that will not turn is a snapped drive belt. The motor continues to run, making a humming noise, but the belt is no longer connecting it to the drum. Other potential issues include a failed motor capacitor or worn out jockey wheels that prevent movement.

Condenser dryers collect moisture in a water container. If the pump that moves water to this tank fails, or if the sensor gets blocked with lint, the machine registers the container as full and stops mid-cycle. Emptying the tank and cleaning the condenser unit can help, but internal pump faults require repair.
