Know the home, know the fault

A seaside settlement on the coast of Tor Bay with a strong tourism industry contains a mix of permanent residences and holiday accommodation. Properties range from the fine examples of Victorian architecture around Church Street and Palace Avenue to houses in former villages like Preston. In holiday lets and family homes alike, a washer dryer is a practical choice where space is limited. These machines handle the washing and drying in a single drum, which is highly convenient but means the internal components work twice as hard as those in separate appliances. When a single unit does both jobs, a breakdown stops the laundry process entirely. Washer dryers are complex machines with distinct washing and drying systems packed into one cabinet. A failure in the drying cycle might leave clothes damp or cause a programme to run endlessly without finishing. This happens when a heater element fails, a thermostat stops reading the temperature correctly, or lint blocks the condenser chamber. On the washing side, the machine might refuse to fill with water, fail to drain, or stop spinning. Door seals take a lot of punishment from both hot water and hot air, making them prone to splitting and causing leaks down the front of the cabinet. Control modules can also develop faults, displaying error codes and halting the machine completely. We visit homes across the area, including the Hookhills estate, to repair these appliances. During a visit, we investigate the exact nature of the fault. For drying issues, we check the heater, fan and condenser unit. If the machine is not washing properly, we test the inlet valves, drain pump and motor brushes. We also inspect the door seal for tears and test the electronic control board to resolve error codes.

A cycle that never finishes usually points to a problem with the heating or thermostat system. If the machine cannot reach the correct temperature, the control board will keep the cycle running indefinitely. It can also happen if the condenser chamber is blocked with lint, preventing moisture from being extracted from the clothes.

Leaks from the front of the cabinet are usually caused by a damaged door seal. The rubber gasket on a washer dryer is exposed to both hot washing water and heated drying air, which degrades the material over time. A split or tear in the rubber allows water to escape during the wash or rinse cycles.

When a machine fails to drain, the most likely culprit is a blockage in the pump filter or the drain hose. Coins, hair grips or lint can bypass the drum and jam the pump impeller. If the filter is clear, the drain pump itself might have failed electrically and will need to be replaced.
