Know the home, know the fault

Located on the shores of Tor Bay, the seaside town of Paignton originally developed from a small fishing community. Significant growth occurred after a new harbour was constructed in the mid nineteenth century, and as the settlement expanded, it eventually absorbed the nearby villages of Goodrington and Preston. The older central streets, such as Church Street, Winner Street and Palace Avenue, feature many properties built in the Victorian architectural style. Because the local economy is heavily dependent on the tourism industry and family holidays, the area contains a wide selection of holiday accommodation for visiting tourists. In these larger Victorian homes or busy holiday lets, an electric range cooker is a practical choice for preparing large meals. These large appliances feature multiple cooking zones, typically including a main oven, a secondary oven, a grill and an electric or induction hob. When a main or secondary oven stops heating, the issue is usually a blown heating element or a faulty thermostat. Fan motors can also wear out over time, leaving the oven unable to circulate hot air. Hob faults might involve a single cooking zone failing to heat, pointing to a broken ring or a faulty control switch. If turning on a specific function causes the range cooker to trip the electrics, this usually indicates an earth leak from a damaged internal component. We travel out to repair electric range cookers in homes and holiday accommodation across the area, including places like the Hookhills estate. During a visit, we look at the controls, fans, thermostats and heating elements to find the fault. We work on electric and induction cooking appliances only, meaning we do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

This happens when an internal component develops an earth leak, causing your consumer unit to cut the power for safety. The fault is usually caused by a split heating element in the main or secondary oven, but a damaged fan motor or faulty control switch can also be responsible.

If the fan is running and the indicator lights are on but the oven remains cold, the fan heating element has likely failed. If the oven is completely dead, the issue might be a faulty thermostat, a damaged selector switch or a problem with the main terminal block at the back of the appliance.

When a single cooking zone on an electric hob fails to heat, the heating element under the glass has usually broken. Alternatively, the energy regulator or control switch behind the dial may have burnt out. We look at the hob controls and the rings themselves to identify the fault.
