Know the home, know the fault

Properties on the south-western edge of Dartmoor range from bed and breakfast accommodation serving walkers to grand villas built during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. The area south and west of the village centre roundabout was settled with opulent houses for commuters. Larger homes generally have spacious kitchens, where wide induction or ceramic hobs are installed into island units or deep worktops. In guest houses, cooking appliances see heavy use preparing morning meals. Whether a property is a private residence or a business hosting visitors, an electric cooking surface needs to function reliably. We repair electric and induction models, though we do not work on gas hobs or any gas appliances. When a ceramic or induction hob develops a fault, the symptoms depend on the underlying technology. Ceramic models rely on radiant heating elements beneath the glass, which can burn out and leave a specific zone cold while the rest continue to work. Induction variants use copper coils to create a magnetic field, and a failure in the power module or generator board will stop the pan from heating. Touch controls can become unresponsive if moisture gets under the glass or if the user interface board fails. Sometimes, a hob will switch off unexpectedly and display an error code, or a dead short in the wiring will trip the electrics at the consumer unit. Our route out past Roborough Down brings us to your home, where we look at rings that will not heat, unresponsive touch controls, and units that trip the power. We dismantle the appliance in place to test the terminal block, wiring harness, and individual heating zones or induction coils. Testing the internal components helps us understand why a hob switches off unexpectedly or displays an error code on the control panel.

An induction hob will switch off if it detects an overheating component. This happens when the internal cooling fan fails or if the ventilation space underneath the appliance is blocked. It can also shut down if the pan is removed, or if a fault develops on the main power board.

A ceramic zone usually stops heating because the radiant element beneath the glass has burned out and broken the electrical circuit. Alternatively, the energy regulator or the relay on the control board that sends power to that specific ring may have failed, requiring a replacement part to restore function.

Touch controls become unresponsive if liquid boils over and sits on the glass, confusing the sensors. If the surface is clean and dry, the issue is internal. The user interface board may have a fault, or the communication cable linking the touch panel to the main control module has degraded.
