Know the home, know the fault

The properties on the south-western edge of Dartmoor include grand, opulent villas built during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, alongside several bed-and-breakfast businesses serving walkers and visitors to National Trust sites. In larger houses, a fridge might be kept in a utility room or a spacious kitchen, while guest accommodation relies on cooling appliances to store breakfast ingredients. When a fridge is positioned in an unheated space or an outbuilding, fluctuating ambient temperatures can affect how the compressor cycles. A fridge needs a stable room temperature to maintain its internal climate, and extreme cold in a utility area might stop the thermostat from triggering the cooling process. A fridge that runs constantly or clicks without cooling properly usually points to a struggling compressor or a faulty start relay. If water pools inside the cabinet or leaks onto the floor, the defrost drain is likely blocked by food debris or ice, forcing condensation to overflow. Ice building up on the back wall indicates a problem with the defrost heater, a failing thermostat, or a torn door seal letting warm air enter. When warm air meets the cold interior, it condenses and freezes, forcing the appliance to work harder. Faulty interior lights or a cabinet that feels too warm can also result from a damaged door seal, as the fridge struggles to retain its chilled air. Our route takes us near Roborough Down. During a visit, we look at fridges that are warm, not cooling evenly, or making new noises. We check for water pooling inside or on the floor, investigate ice building up on the back wall, and examine appliances that are running constantly or clicking. Our inspection covers faulty lights, thermostats, and door seals to find the cause of the cooling failure. We repair domestic appliances in customers' homes.

Water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor is usually caused by a blocked defrost drain. Condensation normally runs down the back wall and into a drain hole, but food particles or ice can block this path. Once blocked, the water overflows and collects under the salad crisper drawers.

Ice building up on the back wall happens when warm air enters the cabinet or the defrost system fails. A split door seal lets room-temperature air inside, which condenses and freezes. Alternatively, a faulty thermostat or broken defrost heater stops the appliance from clearing its normal frost accumulation during cycles.

Constant running or a repetitive clicking noise points to a problem with the compressor or its start relay. The clicking is the sound of the relay trying and failing to start the motor. If the compressor runs constantly without cooling the interior, the appliance might be struggling with a sealed system fault.
