Know the home, know the fault

Yelverton is located on the south western side of Dartmoor, having expanded during the nineteenth century to accommodate people commuting into Plymouth. Housing to the south and west of the village centre features large villas built during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, while multiple bed and breakfast businesses in the area accommodate walkers and tourists visiting local heritage sites. In large period properties, kitchens can be positioned in older extensions with high ceilings, meaning cooker hoods are relied upon to clear cooking odours across a wide space. Extractor fans in guest houses handle heavy use during morning preparation, pulling moisture and grease away from the hob. When an extractor hood loses suction, cooking smells and steam linger in the room. This happens when the motor fails to turn the fan blades, or if grease builds up heavily inside the unit and blocks the airflow. Motors can also become noisy or start vibrating, which points to worn bearings or an unbalanced fan wheel. Another issue is lighting failure. If replacing the bulb does not restore the light over the cooking area, the fault might lie within the switch mechanism, the control board or the internal wiring. Regular cleaning of the grease filters helps maintain airflow, but mechanical parts eventually wear out and require attention. Once there, we look at fans that will not run or have lost suction, as well as noisy or vibrating motors. Please note that our cooking appliance repairs are electric and induction only, so we do not work on gas hobs, gas cookers or any gas appliance.

A vibrating noise usually indicates an issue with the motor or the fan wheel. The fan blades can become unbalanced if grease builds up unevenly, or a foreign object might be caught inside the housing. Alternatively, the motor bearings wear down over time, causing the spindle to rattle when the extractor is switched on.

If changing the bulb does not fix the problem, the fault is likely electrical. The light switch contacts can fail due to grease ingress or general wear. In some units, the light fitting itself degrades from the heat of the hob below, or there may be a fault on the main control board.

Poor suction happens when the airflow is restricted or the motor is failing. Saturated grease filters block the air from passing through the hood, leaving cooking smells in the room. If the filters are clean, the motor might be running too slowly to draw air, or the external venting duct could be blocked.
