Know the home, know the fault

Properties on the south-western boundary of Dartmoor range from large late Victorian and Edwardian villas located south and west of the central roundabout to bed-and-breakfast businesses accommodating walkers. In spacious houses with dedicated utility rooms, washing machines might be plumbed in away from the main kitchen, which can mean longer waste pipe runs. For guest accommodation, machines work hard processing heavy bedding and towels, putting extra strain on drum bearings, motor carbon brushes and door hinges. When a washing machine processes heavy loads like thick towels, the drum can become unbalanced during the spin cycle, leading to excessive vibration and noise. Over time, this movement stresses the shock absorbers and suspension springs. A machine that will not drain or spin is another issue, usually caused by a blockage in the pump filter or a failed drain pump. Leaks can develop from the door seal if it is torn by a zip, or from internal hoses and the pump area. If the appliance trips the electrics, the heating element might have failed, or water could be reaching a live electrical component. Door locks can also fail mechanically, leaving a door that will not open or close. During a visit, we look at draining, spinning, filling and heating faults. We check for leaks from seals, hoses and the pump area, and inspect door locks or doors that will not open or close. If a machine trips the electrics, shows error codes, has a noisy drum or vibrates excessively on spin, we trace the fault to the specific internal component.

Excessive vibration on spin is usually caused by an unbalanced load, such as washing a single heavy towel. If the machine vibrates heavily even with a balanced load, the internal shock absorbers or suspension springs might be worn out. Worn drum bearings can also cause severe vibration and a very noisy drum.

A machine that will not drain is typically blocked somewhere in the waste system. The most accessible place to check is the pump filter, which catches coins, hair grips and lint. If the filter is clear, the drain pump itself might have failed, or there could be a blockage in the internal sump hose.

When a washing machine trips the electrics, it indicates an electrical short or earth fault. This happens if water leaks onto a live component like the motor or drain pump. Another possibility is a failed heating element, which can split and expose internal wiring to the water inside the drum.
