Properties on the south-western edge of Dartmoor range from grand late Victorian and Edwardian villas to bed-and-breakfasts accommodating walkers. In large houses, a freestanding electric cooker might serve as a secondary appliance in a utility space or an annexe, while guest accommodation relies heavily on cooking equipment for morning meals. Heavy use of the hob rings and grill elements in a guest house setting puts continuous thermal stress on the appliance components. When a cooker is used to prepare multiple breakfasts back to back, the internal wiring and switches endure prolonged high temperatures. A freestanding electric cooker houses several distinct heating systems in one unit. Hob zones that fail to heat up usually point to a degraded element or a faulty energy regulator behind the control knob. If the oven or grill stops getting hot but the fan still turns and the indicator light shows, the main heating element has likely failed. Elements degrade over time through standard heating and cooling cycles until the internal filament breaks. Sometimes, a degraded element will split its outer casing, which creates a short circuit to the earth connection and trips the household electrics the moment that function is selected. Door hinges also weaken with use, preventing the oven from sealing and letting heat escape. During a visit, we look at oven and grill heating faults, hob rings or zones not heating, cookers that trip the electrics, alongside controls, switches and door faults. We work on electric and induction cooking appliances only, meaning we do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765This happens when an electrical component creates a short circuit to earth. The most typical cause is a split or blistered heating element in the oven or grill. It can also happen if moisture gets into the terminal block at the back of the appliance, or if a control switch fails internally.
A solid hotplate has an internal heating track that expands and contracts as it gets hot and cools down. Over time, this thermal movement can cause the internal track to break, stopping the plate from heating. Alternatively, the energy regulator switch behind the control knob might have failed.
When the fan turns and the indicator lights come on but the oven remains cold, the circular heating element surrounding the fan blade has usually failed. The element degrades through normal use until the internal wire breaks. Replacing the element restores the heat while using the existing fan motor.
