Know the home, know the fault

Properties on the south western edge of Dartmoor include grand villas built during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, alongside several bed and breakfast businesses serving walkers. When a property hosts visitors, the kitchen equipment works hard. A large house might rely on a substantial electric oven to feed a full dining room, while a guest house needs reliable cooking facilities for breakfast service. Heavy use accelerates wear on moving parts and heating elements. When an electric oven stops heating, the fault is usually a failed element. A fan oven element can break down internally, leaving the fan running and the thermostat light on while the cavity remains cold. Uneven cooking happens if the fan motor fails to circulate the hot air, or if one element in a multi-function oven stops working. Heavy use in a busy household or guest accommodation puts strain on door hinges and seals, allowing heat to escape and forcing the appliance to work longer to maintain temperature. We also investigate ovens that trip the electrics, which happens when insulation inside a heating component breaks down and shorts to earth. Faulty thermostats, controls and clocks can also prevent the appliance from switching on at all. Driving past Roborough Down, we repair appliances in customers' homes. Our visits cover electric ovens that will not heat or only heat on some functions, uneven cooking, fan oven faults and ovens that trip the power. We look at door hinges, seals and glass, alongside faulty thermostats, controls and clocks. We repair electric and induction cooking appliances only, so we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

This happens when a heating element fails. In a fan oven, the circular element around the fan can break down internally. The fan will still spin and the indicator lights will illuminate, but the air being circulated remains cold. The faulty element needs to be removed and replaced to restore the heat.

An electric oven trips the electrics when a component develops an earth fault. This occurs when the internal insulation of a heating element degrades, allowing electrical current to leak to the metal casing. The consumer unit detects this leakage and cuts the power. The failed component must be identified and replaced.

Uneven cooking in a fan oven points to a problem with air circulation. If the fan motor fails or the fan blade becomes loose, the hot air will not distribute evenly around the cavity. In a conventional oven, one of the heating elements might have failed, leaving the remaining element to provide unbalanced heat.
