Know the home, know the fault
Properties along the River Teign range from Victorian terraces originally built for railway locomotive workers to larger villas constructed for wealthier residents. Out on the edges of the settlement, newer housing developments are adding thousands of homes in areas like Hele Park and Wolborough Barton. Kitchen layouts vary significantly across these different properties. In older terraces, space is at a premium, meaning built-in microwaves are a practical way to keep worktops clear. In the larger villas or modern new builds, combination microwaves are integrated into a bank of tall cabinets alongside the main electric oven to provide extra cooking capacity. When a built-in or combination microwave stops working, the symptoms are quite distinct. A unit that runs but fails to heat food points to a fault within the high voltage side of the appliance, such as the magnetron, capacitor or diode. If the glass turntable will not rotate, the issue is caused by a failed synchronous motor located underneath the cavity floor, or a broken drive coupler. Door latch and switch faults are another issue, where the microswitches fail to register that the door is closed, preventing the appliance from starting. Control panels and digital displays can also become unresponsive or show error codes. Whether your property is in Milber or closer to the centre, we repair built-in and combination microwaves directly in your home. During a visit, we look at microwaves that run but do not heat, turntables that will not turn, door latch and switch faults, as well as unresponsive controls and displays. We work on electric cooking appliances only, so we do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765When a microwave sounds like it is running normally but the food remains cold, the fault lies in the high voltage components. This is a failure of the magnetron, the high voltage capacitor, or the diode. These parts generate the microwave energy required for cooking, and a failure in any of them stops the heating process completely.
A turntable that will not turn is caused by a faulty synchronous motor located beneath the floor of the microwave cavity. Alternatively, the plastic drive coupler that connects the motor to the glass tray might be cracked or stripped. If the motor receives power but cannot turn, it needs to be replaced to restore rotation.
Microwaves have a series of safety microswitches inside the door latch mechanism. If one of these switches fails or the plastic latch hooks break, the appliance will not register that the door is securely closed. As a safety measure, the control board prevents the microwave from starting until the switch assembly is repaired.
