Know the home, know the fault
In larger family kitchens, an electric range cooker provides multiple cooking zones. These heavy appliances require a dedicated electrical circuit, which is a consideration when fitting them into older homes built long before modern electrical standards. When an electric range cooker develops a fault, it can affect just one section while the rest continues to work. A main or secondary oven not heating usually points to a failed fan element or a faulty thermostat. Grill and hob faults also occur, where a ceramic or induction zone stops responding to the control dials. If the appliance trips the electrics, the cause is generally an earth leak from a degraded heating element or moisture getting into the wiring. Cooling fans and selector switches wear out over time, leaving the oven unable to regulate temperature or switch between functions. We only work on electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs. When visiting homes near the edge of Bodmin Moor or down towards Moorswater, we look at the controls, fans and thermostats to trace the fault. Our domestic appliance repair service covers electric range cookers that trip the electrics, as well as those with oven, grill or hob faults. We also repair washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers and cooker hoods.

Call 01752 922765When the main or secondary oven stops heating but the fan still runs and the light comes on, the fan element has usually failed. The element is a circular coil at the back of the cavity. Once the internal wire breaks, it can no longer generate heat and requires a replacement part.
Tripping electrics usually point to an earth leak within the appliance. This happens when the insulation inside a heating element breaks down, allowing electrical current to escape. It can affect the oven, grill or hob elements. A faulty selector switch or degraded internal wiring can also cause the circuit breaker to trip.
Electric range cookers use a cooling fan to protect the control dials and internal wiring from heat damage. This fan operates independently of the main oven fan and is controlled by a thermal switch. It will continue running until the appliance has cooled down to a safe temperature.
