Homes in Looe

Know the home, know the fault

The housing across Looe varies from modern properties on the elevated land to the north, to older fishermen's houses where living quarters were built upstairs above ground level storage areas. With a local economy relying heavily on tourism, the town has a large proportion of holiday homes and guest houses. Properties catering for large groups of visitors often rely on electric range cookers to handle heavy meal preparation. In older buildings with upstairs kitchens, repairing a heavy, multi-cavity range cooker in place makes sense rather than trying to move it down narrow stairs. When a large cooking appliance handles multiple meals a day, wear on the internal components takes its toll. A main or secondary oven failing to heat up usually points to a blown fan element or a faulty thermostat. If the electrics trip when the appliance is turned on, the issue is often a breakdown in the insulation around one of the heating elements. On the top section, solid plate or ceramic hob zones can stop responding due to failed energy regulators or damaged wiring behind the control panel. Cooling fans and oven selector switches also degrade over time, leaving certain cooking functions unusable. We look at main or secondary ovens that have stopped heating, grill and hob faults, as well as unresponsive controls, fans and thermostats. We also trace electrical faults on range cookers that trip the household circuit breakers. We only work on electric and induction appliances, so we do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

This usually happens when the insulation inside an oven heating element breaks down, allowing moisture to penetrate and create a short circuit to earth. It can also be caused by a faulty selector switch or damaged wiring behind the control panel. We test the internal components to locate the electrical fault.

A spinning fan with no heat almost always indicates a blown fan oven element. The element surrounds the fan blade at the back of the cavity and does the actual heating. When it fails, the thermostat still tells the fan to circulate air, but the air remains cold until the element is replaced.

Yes, we look at electric and induction hob faults on range cookers. When a ceramic or solid plate ring stays on maximum heat regardless of the dial position, the energy regulator behind the control knob has usually failed. Replacing the faulty regulator restores normal temperature control to that specific cooking zone.
