Know the home, know the fault

Kitchens in older properties might have limited worktop space, making built-in microwaves a practical choice to keep surfaces clear. In newer developments, integrated combination models are sometimes fitted at eye level alongside electric ovens. Whether a property sits near the edge of Bodmin Moor or closer to the centre, a built-in microwave is a heavy appliance that is difficult to remove when a fault develops. A microwave that runs but fails to heat the food usually has a fault within the high-voltage circuit, such as a failed magnetron, capacitor or diode. If the turntable stops rotating, the food will heat unevenly. This is typically caused by a broken synchronous motor situated under the floor of the cavity, or occasionally a snapped drive coupling. Door latches and microswitches are another area that requires attention. The door must close securely to engage the safety switches; if the plastic hooks wear down or a switch fails, the appliance will remain completely dead to prevent operation while open. Control panels and digital displays can also become unresponsive over time. We repair built-in and combination microwaves in your home. During a visit, we look at microwaves that run but do not heat, turntables that will not turn, door latch and switch faults, and unresponsive controls or displays. Because these appliances contain high-voltage components that retain a charge even when unplugged, they require specific testing procedures. We dismantle the casing in the kitchen to test the internal components and locate the fault.

When a microwave sounds like it is working but the food remains cold, the issue is usually within the high-voltage circuit. The magnetron, which generates the microwave energy, may have failed. Alternatively, a faulty high-voltage capacitor or diode can prevent the magnetron from receiving the correct power to operate.

A turntable that will not turn is typically caused by a faulty synchronous motor located underneath the microwave cavity. If the motor burns out or its internal gears strip, it cannot rotate the glass plate. Sometimes, the plastic drive coupling that connects the motor to the turntable can also crack or snap.

A completely dead microwave is often caused by a blown internal fuse or a fault with the door interlock switches. The door has small plastic hooks that engage microswitches when closed. If a hook breaks or a switch fails, the appliance cuts all power to prevent it from operating with the door open.
