Homes in Newton Abbot

Know the home, know the fault

The housing stock in Newton Abbot reflects its Victorian expansion alongside the South Devon Railway locomotive works. Older properties range from terraced streets built for railway workers to attractive villas. Recent developments on the outskirts, such as those at Hele Park, add modern housing to the area. Across these different property types, tumble dryers are usually fitted into kitchens or utility rooms. A machine kept in an unheated space might struggle to reach operating temperature, while a dryer in a compact terraced kitchen relies heavily on good ventilation to prevent condensation building up. When a dryer runs but fails to heat, the issue is typically a blown thermal overload cut-out or a failed heating element. If the drum will not turn, a snapped drive belt or a seized motor bearing is the likely cause. Machines that stop mid-cycle or refuse to start might be suffering from a faulty door switch or a blocked moisture sensor. Condenser models rely on a clean heat exchanger and a functioning pump to move extracted moisture into the water container. If the pump fails, the appliance will halt. Noisy running usually points to worn drum support rollers or degraded tension pulleys. Whether you live near the centre or out towards Milber, we repair appliances in customers' homes. During a visit, we look at dryers that run but do not heat, drums that will not turn, and machines that stop mid-cycle or will not start. We also investigate condenser and water container faults, alongside noisy running. We repair many kitchen appliances, but please note we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

A dryer that turns normally without heating usually has a fault in the heating circuit. This might be a blown thermal cut-out thermostat, which trips if the machine overheats due to poor airflow. Alternatively, the heating element itself may have failed and will need to be tested with a multimeter to check for continuity.

If the water container is actually empty but the warning light stays on, the pump that moves water from the bottom tray to the top container might be blocked or faulty. A defective microswitch on the container housing can also cause the machine to incorrectly sense that the tank is full, halting the cycle.

A rumbling or thumping noise during operation points to worn mechanical parts supporting the drum. The support rollers at the front or rear can wear down over time, or the tension pulley that keeps the drive belt tight might have degraded bearings. Worn drum bearings will also cause a heavy grinding sound as it rotates.
