Know the home, know the fault

Properties around this historic port range from older houses near the seventh-century church to secondary residences and holiday lets. The settlement sits at the entrance to a large flooded valley that forms a natural harbour, a location that once served as the main port for loading ammunition for the US military during the Second World War. Today, tourism accounts for more than half the jobs in the area, meaning many domestic washing machines see heavy seasonal use turning around bedding and towels. In older buildings that predate modern utility rooms, these appliances are sometimes fitted into tight kitchen spaces, which can make moving them for maintenance slightly more involved. A machine that will not drain or spin is a standard fault, usually pointing to a blockage in the pump filter or a failed drain pump. When a drum becomes excessively noisy or vibrates heavily on a spin cycle, the suspension legs or drum bearings have usually worn down. Leaks can develop from degraded door seals, split internal hoses, or around the pump housing. If the appliance trips the electrics or stops mid-cycle with an error code, the heating element or motor carbon brushes might need replacing. Door locks can also fail mechanically or electrically, leaving wet laundry trapped inside until the mechanism is released and replaced. We also visit surrounding spots like Readymoney. During a visit, we diagnose draining, spinning, filling and heating faults directly in your home. We look at leaks from seals, hoses and the pump area, as well as door locks and doors that will not open or close. Our repairs cover machines that trip the electrics or show error codes, alongside investigating noisy drums and excessive vibration on spin. We work on freestanding and integrated models, though we do not work on gas appliances.

This usually happens when the machine cannot drain. The control board detects that water is still in the drum and halts the cycle to prevent flooding. The fault is typically a blocked pump filter, a clogged waste hose, or a failed drain pump that needs to be replaced.

A door will remain locked if the machine still contains water, as a safety feature to prevent spills. If the drum is empty, the door interlock mechanism itself may have failed electrically or jammed mechanically. The handle can also snap internally, preventing it from releasing the catch.

Loud banging or heavy vibration during a spin cycle usually indicates worn suspension legs or degraded drum bearings. The suspension legs act like shock absorbers, and when they fail, the drum moves excessively. If the bearings have collapsed, the drum will rumble and have noticeable vertical play.
