Know the home, know the fault
The housing stock in Newton Abbot ranges from terraced streets originally built for South Devon Railway locomotive works employees to attractive villas created for wealthier residents. Modern properties are also being added, with recent and planned developments on the outskirts aiming to bring thousands of new homes to areas like Hele Park and Wolborough Barton. In older terraces, a washing machine might be installed in a narrow kitchen, where restricted space makes moving the appliance difficult. In larger villas or modern builds, utility rooms are more typical, meaning the appliance is further from living spaces and a noisy spin cycle might go unnoticed until a fault develops. When a washing machine starts to fail, the symptoms depend on which internal component is struggling. A machine that will not drain or spin usually has a blockage in the pump area or a worn pump impeller. If the drum is noisy or vibrates excessively on a spin cycle, the motor brushes might be worn down, or the main drum bearings could be failing. Leaks tend to originate from degraded door seals, split internal hoses, or a loose filter housing. We also look at machines that trip the electrics or display error codes, which can point to a faulty heating element shorting out to earth. Sometimes the issue is a door that will not open or close because the mechanical latch or electronic interlock has snapped. During a visit, we diagnose draining, spinning, filling and heating faults directly in your home. We inspect the appliance for leaks from seals, hoses and the pump area, and check door locks if the machine will not start. Please note that while we repair electric domestic appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A machine that will not spin or finish its cycle is usually struggling to empty the water. The main control board requires the drum to be empty before it allows a fast spin. We check the pump area for blockages, inspect the drain hoses, and test the pump motor to identify the fault.
Doors that will not open are typically held shut by the electronic interlock. This safety mechanism prevents the door from opening while water is inside or the drum is moving. If the machine has not drained, or if the interlock itself has failed, the door remains locked. An engineer will manually release the door and diagnose the faulty mechanism.
Machines that trip the electrics usually have a component that is shorting to earth. In a washing machine, the water heating element can split and expose internal wiring to water, creating a short circuit. A damaged motor or a leak dripping onto electrical connections can also cause the main breaker to trip immediately.
