Homes in Newton Abbot

Know the home, know the fault

The housing across Newton Abbot reflects its history, from the Victorian expansion driven by the South Devon Railway locomotive works to modern developments on the outskirts. Terraced streets built for railway workers and attractive villas created for wealthier residents sit alongside newer homes in areas like Hele Park. In older properties, kitchens might have been adapted over the decades to fit modern built-in or freestanding electric ovens. Newer houses are usually designed with integrated cooking appliances from the start. Whether an oven is slotted into a narrow galley kitchen in a period terrace or built into a modern fitted unit, it relies on the same basic heating technology. When an electric oven stops heating, the issue is usually a failed element. Fan ovens rely on a circular element surrounding a fan blade to distribute heat evenly. If the fan turns but the air stays cold, the element has likely burnt out. Uneven cooking can point to a failing fan motor or a faulty thermostat struggling to regulate the temperature. Sometimes, an oven will trip the household electrics the moment it is switched on. This happens when the insulation inside a heating element breaks down and causes a short circuit. Mechanical parts wear out too. Heavy doors strain hinges, causing them to drop, while worn rubber seals let heat escape, forcing the appliance to work harder. We look at electric ovens that will not heat or only heat on certain functions, as well as appliances that trip the electrics. A visit covers diagnosing uneven cooking and fan oven faults, along with checking door hinges, seals and glass. We also inspect faulty thermostats, controls and clocks. We only repair electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

This usually happens when a heating element fails. As the element degrades, the internal insulation breaks down, allowing the electrical current to short out against the metal casing. The household consumer unit detects this fault and trips the circuit breaker to cut the power. Replacing the faulty element resolves the short circuit.

Fan ovens use a circular heating element located behind the back panel, right around the fan blade. If the fan motor is working but there is no heat, the circular element has almost certainly burnt out. The oven will need a replacement element to restore the heating function.

Yes, a degraded or torn rubber door seal allows hot air to escape from the oven cavity. This forces the thermostat to constantly cycle the heating elements on and off as it struggles to maintain the correct temperature. A new seal keeps the heat inside, improving cooking performance and energy efficiency.
