Homes in Newton Abbot

Know the home, know the fault

The local housing stock in this part of Devon includes older terraces constructed for railway employees, sitting alongside large, attractive villas built for more affluent residents. More recently, developments on the outskirts have added new properties in areas like Hele Park. In Victorian terraces, space can be tight, meaning a wine cooler might be squeezed into a narrow gap under a counter or placed in a dining room. In larger villas or modern homes, they are often built into kitchen islands. Wherever a chiller is placed, it needs adequate airflow around the condenser coils to dissipate heat. Without this, the compressor has to work harder to maintain the internal temperature. When a wine cooler fails to hold its set temperature, the issue is sometimes related to restricted ventilation, but internal components also fail. Dual-zone models can develop a fault where one zone fails while the other remains cold. This points to a problem with a temperature sensor or the control board failing to direct cold air correctly. Condensation and misting on the glass door usually indicate a failing door seal letting ambient air inside, or a problem with the internal circulation fan. If a fan stops running, cold air pools at the bottom of the cabinet, leaving bottles at the top too warm. When we examine a faulty wine cooler, we look at the fans, control boards, and temperature sensors to find out why it is not cooling. We check for condensation issues and test dual-zone systems to see if the internal components are operating. We repair electric domestic appliances in the home, though we do not work on gas appliances of any kind.

Condensation and misting on the door happen when warm room air enters the chilled cabinet. This is usually caused by a split or flattened magnetic door seal. It can also occur if the internal circulation fan fails, preventing air from moving evenly inside the cooler. We can inspect the seals and fans to resolve this.

Dual-zone models rely on sensors, fans, and sometimes a motorised damper to distribute cold air between the upper and lower sections. If one zone fails while the other holds its temperature, a faulty sensor or a broken fan is likely responsible. We test these individual components to find out why the air is not circulating.

When a cooler will not hold temperature at all, the compressor might be struggling due to poor ventilation around the cabinet. Alternatively, the main control board or the thermostat may have failed, meaning the cooling system never receives the signal to switch on. We check the controls and the cooling circuit during our visit.
