Homes in Torpoint, and what they need

About Torpoint

The place and its homes

Situated on a peninsula in southeast Cornwall, this settlement sits on a tidal estuary directly across the water from Plymouth. Originally designed and built as an eighteenth-century planned town, the area expanded as people working at the nearby Devonport Dockyard moved in to settle there. The local population grew further when the Royal Navy built its primary training base, HMS Raleigh, in the town. Today, it is home to about 7,444 people.

In homes like these

What that means for your appliances

Older properties often feature compact kitchens. Finding space for modern domestic appliances in a smaller room can mean fitting washing machines and dishwashers tightly under worktops. When a fridge freezer is pushed hard against a wall in a confined space, restricted airflow can cause the compressor to overheat and fail. Similarly, washer dryers working in narrow areas need adequate ventilation to dry clothes effectively. If a tumble dryer or washing machine needs attention, pulling it out from a tight gap requires patience to avoid kinking the inlet hoses or crushing the waste pipe. Keeping filters clear helps these machines run efficiently, even when space is at a premium.

02What we look out for

What these homes mean for your appliances

01

Kinked hoses behind undercounter washing machines

When a washing machine is pushed back into a tight space beneath a kitchen worktop, the inlet hose can easily fold and restrict the water supply. This causes the machine to halt mid-cycle and display a fill error. Pulling the appliance forward allows the hose to be straightened.

02

Overheating compressors on freestanding fridge freezers

Fridge freezers require a gap at the back to allow heat to escape. If an appliance is squeezed into a narrow alcove, the compressor runs continuously to maintain the internal temperature. This constant strain eventually causes the cooling system to fail, leaving the compartments too warm.

03

Blown fan elements in electric ovens

A fan oven that blows cold air usually has a failed heating element. The element degrades over time through normal cooking cycles until the internal wire breaks. Once a working element is fitted, the oven can bake and roast food evenly again.

03Where we go

Torpoint and around it

Operating from our Plymouth base, we cross the water via the Torpoint Ferry to repair domestic appliances in the town and the surrounding civil parish. Our working area includes homes near local landmarks like the Council Hall and Antony House. We also visit properties in Antony, as well as nearby towns such as Millbrook and Saltash. Across the tidal estuary, we cover Devonport and the wider Plymouth area.

Yes, our engineers travel across the tidal estuary to repair domestic appliances in Torpoint and the surrounding settlements. We cover nearby towns including Millbrook and Saltash, as well as Antony. Based in Plymouth, we take calls on a local 01752 number and visit homes throughout the area.

No, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance. Our engineers only repair electric and induction cooking appliances. If you have an electric oven, electric range cooker, or an electric or induction hob that needs attention, we can help with those faults.

Washer dryers use a condenser system that relies on a steady flow of cool air. In a compact kitchen, the ambient air can become warm and humid during the cycle. This makes the condensation process less efficient, leaving clothes damp. Keeping the room well ventilated helps the machine dry effectively.

Standing water usually points to a blockage in the drainage system. In older properties where appliances share plumbing connections under compact sinks, food debris can clog the waste pipe or the sink spigot. Clearing the filters and checking the drain hose for blockages will normally allow the water to drain.
