Know the home, know the fault

Torpoint is an eighteenth-century planned settlement sitting on a peninsula in southeast Cornwall, directly across the tidal estuary from Plymouth. As workers from the nearby Devonport dockyard moved across the water to settle, the housing expanded. The population grew again when the main Royal Navy training base was established here. Kitchen layouts differ, but built-in and freestanding electric cooking appliances are standard fixtures. We only work on electric and induction models, so we do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs. When an electric oven stops working, the issue is usually isolated to a few specific components. A machine that will not heat at all, or only heats on certain settings, might have a failed element or a faulty selector switch. Uneven cooking in a fan oven points to a broken fan motor or a circular element that has burnt out. If the appliance trips the electrics, it is due to insulation breaking down inside a heating element, causing a short circuit to earth. We also inspect mechanical parts, as worn door hinges, torn seals and damaged glass prevent the cavity from retaining heat properly. Faulty thermostats, control boards and clocks can also stop the appliance from functioning. We travel out across the area, passing landmarks like the Torpoint Ferry, to repair appliances in customers' homes. During a visit, we test the oven to see why it will not heat or why it heats unevenly. We check the wiring and components for faults that trip the power, and we examine door hinges, seals, glass, thermostats and controls.

An electric oven usually trips the household electrics because a heating element has failed. As the element degrades, its internal insulation breaks down, allowing electrical current to short to the metal outer casing. We test the elements, wiring and controls to locate the short circuit and resolve the power tripping issue.

If the fan spins but the oven cavity remains cold, the circular heating element surrounding the fan has likely burnt out. The appliance still receives power, which is why the fan motor and indicator lights continue to operate. We check the element and the thermostat to find the exact fault.

Oven doors fail to close properly when the hinges become worn or bent over time. A loose door allows heat to escape, which leads to uneven cooking and can melt the surrounding control knobs. We inspect the hinges, the door catches and the rubber seals to restore a tight fit.
