Know the home, know the fault

Originally built as an eighteenth-century planned town, the housing here expanded as workers from the nearby dockyard settled across the tidal estuary. The population grew further when the Royal Navy established its primary training base in the area. In older properties, kitchens might have been updated several times, meaning extractor hoods are sometimes retrofitted into existing chimney breasts or mounted on exterior walls. Whether a property is a historic terraced house or a newer build, the extractor plays a vital role in managing airborne grease and steam. Without adequate ventilation, moisture from boiling pans settles on cabinets and walls. When an extractor stops pulling air effectively, the fault can lie inside the motor casing. Grease particles bypass saturated filters over time, coating the fan blades and the motor bearings. This build-up creates an imbalance, leading to a noisy or vibrating motor when the unit is switched on. If the fan will not run at all, the fault might be a degraded capacitor or a failed selector switch on the control panel. Lighting circuits in these appliances also fail, sometimes due to blown bulbs but occasionally because heat and moisture have damaged the internal wiring or the switch contacts. Involves a crossing on the Torpoint Ferry. During a visit, we dismantle the casing to inspect the internal components. We look at fans that have lost suction, test the electrical continuity of lights and switches that have failed, and examine noisy motors for bearing wear. We repair electric cooking appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers or gas hobs.

A vibrating motor indicates that the fan blades are unbalanced. This happens when grease and dust bypass the filters and build up unevenly on the impeller. Over time, the imbalance puts strain on the motor bearings, causing a loud rumbling noise. We inspect the motor assembly and check for worn bearings or damaged blades.

If replacing the bulbs does not restore the lighting, the fault is likely within the internal electrical circuit. Heat and cooking moisture can degrade the wiring connections or damage the light switch contacts on the control board. We test the switches, the lamp holders and the internal wiring to locate the break in the circuit.

Poor suction occurs when blocked grease filters restrict the airflow into the unit. If the filters are clean, the issue might be a failing motor capacitor that prevents the fan from reaching full speed, or a blockage in the external venting duct.
