Know the home, know the fault

Originally designed as a planned town in the eighteenth century, Torpoint sits on the Rame Peninsula in southeast Cornwall. The settlement expanded as workers from the Devonport Dockyard moved across the tidal estuary to live there. Later, the local population increased again when the Royal Navy built HMS Raleigh, its primary training base, in the area. In these properties, kitchens might have been updated over the decades, moving from older freestanding cookers to integrated worktops with modern ceramic or induction hobs. A built-in electric hob saves space on the counter, but when it stops working, preparing meals becomes difficult. Ceramic and induction models rely on complex electronics hidden just beneath the glass surface. Touch controls that do not respond might point to a faulty user interface board or moisture trapped under the glass. When zones or rings will not heat, the issue could be a blown heating element in a standard ceramic unit or a failed generator board in an induction model. Error codes and hobs that switch off unexpectedly usually indicate internal overheating or communication failures between the electronic components. Sometimes, a hob will trip the electrics entirely, which happens when a component shorts out to the earth or liquid reaches the internal wiring. When visiting a property near Antony House or elsewhere in the parish, we look at exactly why the appliance is failing. We check for zones that will not heat, unresponsive touch controls, error codes, and hobs that trip the electrics. While we repair electric and induction hobs, we do not work on gas hobs or any gas appliances.

Error codes on an induction hob usually point to a communication fault between the internal electronic boards or an overheating issue. If the cooling fan underneath fails or the ventilation is blocked, the hob will switch off to protect the glass and internal components. We dismantle the unit to inspect the electronics and replace the failing parts.

When a zone on a ceramic hob will not heat, the most likely cause is a blown heating element under the glass. The element wire can break over time due to thermal stress. Alternatively, the energy regulator or a relay on the main control board might have failed, preventing power from reaching that specific ring.

Unresponsive touch controls can happen if liquid boils over and gets trapped between the glass surface and the user interface board underneath. The control board itself can also develop a fault, meaning it no longer registers your finger presses. We look at the interface electronics to see if the board needs replacing.
