Know the home, know the fault

The settlement on the Rame Peninsula began as an eighteenth-century planned town. It later expanded as workers from the Devonport Dockyard across the tidal estuary settled in the area, and grew again with the establishment of the Royal Navy training facility. Finding space for laundry appliances in any home can dictate where a tumble dryer sits. Whether it is installed under a kitchen counter or placed in a utility space, poor ventilation around the machine affects how well it removes moisture from clothes. When a dryer runs but fails to heat, the issue might be a tripped thermostat or a failed heating element. Restricted airflow from a blocked lint filter or a clogged condenser unit forces the machine to work harder, which can cause these thermal components to fail. If the drum refuses to turn while the motor hums, the drive belt has likely snapped or slipped off its pulleys. Machines that stop mid-cycle or refuse to start entirely might have a faulty door switch or a problem with the moisture sensors. Condenser and water container faults also prevent a cycle from finishing, leaving laundry damp. We travel across the area, including out towards Antony, to fix appliances in customers' homes. During a visit, we look at dryers that run but do not heat, drums that will not turn, and machines that stop mid-cycle or will not start. We also investigate condenser and water container faults, as well as noisy running caused by worn support rollers or bearings. While we repair electrical white goods, we do not work on gas appliances.

A dryer that tumbles without heating usually has a tripped safety thermostat or a broken heating element. This happens when restricted airflow causes the machine to overheat. A blocked lint filter or a clogged condenser unit will trigger the thermostats to cut the heat. We can test these components during a visit.

If you can hear the motor running but the drum remains still, the drive belt has likely snapped or come off the pulleys. A seized jockey wheel or worn drum bearings can also prevent rotation. We look at drums that will not turn to identify which mechanical part has failed.

Machines that stop mid-cycle often have a problem with the moisture sensors inside the drum. If these sensors are coated in fabric softener residue, they cannot detect dampness accurately. Alternatively, condenser and water container faults, such as a blocked pump or a full reservoir, will halt the cycle prematurely.
