Know the home, know the fault

The housing across this eighteenth-century planned town includes properties originally built as Devonport Dockyard workers moved across the water to settle. Further expansion happened when the Royal Navy established its main training facility here. In older terraces and newer builds alike, upright and chest freezers are relied upon to keep food preserved. When a freezer is placed in an unheated utility space or a narrow kitchen, it has to work hard to maintain its internal temperature. Poor ventilation around the cabinet can restrict airflow to the condenser coils at the back, meaning the compressor has to run for longer periods to remove heat from the interior. A freezer that runs constantly or triggers a temperature alarm is struggling to stay cold enough. This is sometimes caused by a split or degraded door seal, which lets warm room air seep inside. As that moisture-heavy air hits the cold interior, it freezes, leading to heavy ice build-up that can eventually make the plastic drawers stick or crack. If the appliance is icing up rapidly, the defrost heater or timer might have failed, preventing the system from clearing frost off the evaporator matrix. When the evaporator gets choked with ice, the fan cannot circulate cold air, leaving the top shelves thawing while the bottom remains frozen solid. Once at your property, we look at why the appliance is not freezing properly. We check the condition of the door seals, test the thermostat and defrost components, and inspect the compressor relay. Whether it is a chest model in a garage or an upright unit in the kitchen, we trace the fault to its source. We also repair other electric appliances, though we do not work on gas equipment.

This happens when heavy ice builds up on the shelves and runners. It is usually caused by warm air entering the cabinet through a damaged door seal or a door that has been left slightly open. The moisture freezes instantly, creating thick frost that physically blocks the plastic drawers from sliding in and out.

A temperature alarm sounds when the interior is not cold enough to keep food frozen. This can happen if the compressor is failing, the thermostat is faulty, or the condenser coils are blocked with dust. The appliance will struggle to remove heat, causing the internal temperature to rise above freezing.

A freezer runs continuously when it cannot reach its target temperature. The compressor stays on to try and cool the cabinet down. This might be due to a refrigerant leak, a faulty start relay, or simply because the appliance is positioned in a room that is too warm for it to operate efficiently.
