Know the home, know the fault

The settlement on this tidal estuary was originally built as a planned town in the eighteenth century. It later expanded as workers from Devonport Dockyard settled across the water. The local population grew further with the establishment of the Royal Navy training facility at HMS Raleigh. A fridge needs adequate airflow around its exterior to dissipate the heat it removes from the cabinet. When pushed tightly into a narrow alcove or surrounded by fitted units in a compact kitchen, the compressor has to work harder to maintain the correct internal temperature. When a fridge struggles to cool evenly or feels warm inside, the issue might be a failing thermostat or a blocked circulation fan. Ice building up on the back wall of the cabinet points to a defrost heater failure or a damaged door seal letting humid room air inside. If water is pooling under the salad crispers or leaking onto the floor, the internal condensation drain hole is likely blocked with food debris. A compressor that runs constantly, clicks loudly, or makes new vibrating noises indicates mechanical strain or a faulty start relay. Faulty interior lights or worn hinges also stop the appliance from working as it should. During a repair visit in Torpoint, we look at fridges that are too warm, too cold, noisy, or leaking. We check for water pooling inside the cabinet or on the floor, ice building up on the back wall, and constant running or clicking. We also examine faulty lights, thermostats, and door seals to find out why the appliance is failing.

Water pooling under the salad drawers usually means the condensation drain hole is blocked. Fridges produce moisture that runs down the back wall and exits through a small hole. If crumbs or food debris block this path, the water has nowhere to go and collects inside the cabinet or leaks onto the floor.

A compressor running without a break is trying to cool a cabinet that is losing cold air, perhaps through a damaged door seal. If it clicks loudly, the start relay might be failing or the compressor itself is struggling to engage. A faulty thermostat can also cause the motor to run continuously.

Ice builds up on the back wall when warm, humid air enters the cabinet, usually through a split or worn door seal. It can also happen if the internal temperature is set too low or if a defrost sensor fails. This ice stops the appliance from cooling evenly and forces the motor to work harder.
