Know the home, know the fault

Torpoint began as a planned settlement in the eighteenth century and expanded as people working at the Devonport Dockyard moved across the tidal estuary to live. The local population increased again when the Royal Navy established its main training facility here. In these properties, freestanding electric cookers are a practical choice for preparing meals. Whether a cooker sits in an older property from the original planned layout or a newer house built during the town's expansion, a broken appliance disrupts daily routines. When a freestanding electric cooker stops working, the issue can lie in several different components. A main oven or grill that fails to heat up usually points to a blown heating element or a faulty thermostat. If the solid plates or ceramic zones on the hob remain cold when turned on, the energy regulator or the ring itself might have failed. Sometimes the appliance will trip the household electrics as soon as it is switched on, which happens when moisture gets into a heating element or a wire shorts out against the metal casing. Control knobs can also break, and door hinges can wear out, preventing the oven from holding its temperature. We travel to homes near HMS Raleigh and the surrounding streets to inspect these faults. During a visit, we look at oven and grill heating failures, hob rings or zones not heating, cookers that trip the electrics, and broken controls, switches or doors. We only repair electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

This happens when an electrical component develops a fault and shorts to the earth connection. A likely cause is a split or degraded oven heating element, which allows moisture to penetrate the internal wiring. Faulty selector switches, damaged terminal blocks or melted wiring behind the back panel can also cause the household breakers to trip.

If the indicator lights come on and the fan spins but there is no heat, the fan oven element has likely failed. When the entire cooker is dead, the issue might be a blown fuse in the main connection unit or a burned-out terminal block where the mains cable attaches to the back of the appliance.

Yes, we inspect and replace broken door hinges on freestanding electric cookers. Worn hinges prevent the door from closing tightly, allowing heat to escape and causing uneven cooking temperatures. We look at the hinges, the door seals and the catch mechanisms to find out why the door is failing to shut properly.
