Know the home, know the fault

Properties across the area range from the low density dispersed suburbia built after the Second World War to the major new settlements developing at Sherford and Langage. In any of these kitchens, a cooker hood works hard to pull steam, airborne grease and cooking smells away from the hob. Whether it is a modern chimney extractor in a new build or an older visor model fitted beneath a wall cabinet, the internal components eventually wear down from heat and moisture exposure. Extractor hoods rely on a motor to drive the fan blades, and these moving parts are particularly vulnerable to grease build-up. When a motor becomes coated in sticky residue, it has to work harder, which can lead to noisy or vibrating fans. Sometimes the fan will not run at all, or it might run but have lost suction, leaving cooking smells lingering in the room. Switches and control boards are also susceptible to moisture damage from boiling pans, causing lights to fail or fan speeds to become unresponsive. Because Plymouth is our home base, we travel out to repair appliances across the city and nearby areas like Plympton. During a visit, we look at fans that will not run or have lost suction, noisy or vibrating motors, and lights or switches that have failed. We dismantle the casing to access the internal wiring, checking the motor windings and the control switches for electrical continuity. Please note that our cooking appliance repairs are electric and induction only, so we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

A loss of suction usually happens when the grease filters are completely blocked, restricting the airflow. If the filters are clean but the fan still struggles, the motor might be failing or the fan blades could be loose on the spindle. We can dismantle the unit to check the motor and the internal ducting connection.

Loud noises and vibrations point to a problem with the fan motor or the impeller blades. Over time, grease and dirt can unbalance the blades, causing them to catch on the surrounding casing. Alternatively, the motor bearings might be worn out. We inspect the motor assembly to find the source of the vibration.

If replacing the bulbs does not fix the issue, the fault is likely in the light switch mechanism or the main control board. Steam from boiling pans can penetrate the switch housing, causing the electrical contacts to corrode. We test the switches and the wiring loom to locate the electrical fault.
