Know the home, know the fault

Properties along the steep-sided valley of the river vary from modern houses on the high ground to the north, to older fishermen's houses where the living quarters were built upstairs above ground-level storage areas. A large portion of the local housing is given over to holiday homes and guest houses. In a rental property or a holiday let, a freestanding electric cooker gets used by many different people who might not be familiar with its specific controls. This unfamiliarity can lead to dials being forced or doors being shut heavily, which takes a toll on the appliance over time. A freestanding electric cooker combines an oven, a grill and a hob in one unit, meaning a single component failure can affect how meals are prepared. When an oven or grill stops heating but the fan still runs, the heating element has usually failed. Hob rings or zones that refuse to warm up might have a faulty energy regulator or a damaged element. Switches and control knobs can break internally, leaving you unable to select a temperature. Door hinges also wear out, preventing the oven from sealing properly and letting heat escape, which ruins baking results and melts nearby control dials. Sometimes, a degraded element or a damaged wire will cause the cooker to trip the household electrics as soon as it is switched on. We repair freestanding cooking appliances in your home, looking at oven and grill heating faults, hob zones not heating, broken controls, door issues and cookers that trip the electrics. Our repair work is strictly for electric and induction models, as we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliances.

A cooker will trip the electrics when an internal component develops an earth fault. This happens when a heating element in the oven, grill or hob degrades, allowing electrical current to leak to the metal casing. A damaged wire or a faulty selector switch can also cause this. We test the internal components to find the source of the electrical leak.

When the oven fan spins and the indicator lights turn on but there is no heat, the main heating element has normally failed. Elements burn out over time through normal use. If the fan is also dead, the issue might be a faulty thermostat, a broken selector switch or a problem with the main terminal block at the back of the appliance.

A door that hangs open or drops on one side usually has worn or broken hinges. The hinge receivers inside the cooker frame can also fail. When a door does not close flush, heat escapes, which wastes energy and can melt the plastic control knobs above. We look at the hinges, receivers and door seals to restore a proper closure.
