Homes in Fowey

Know the home, know the fault

Properties around this south Cornwall port town range from primary residences to secondary homes owned by entertainers, alongside properties supporting a local economy where tourism provides more than half the jobs. A combined washer dryer is a practical choice for holiday lets or older properties near the natural harbour, saving space where a separate washing machine and tumble dryer might not fit. In homes that sit empty for parts of the year, or those dealing with heavy use during the tourist season, these dual-purpose machines work hard to wash and dry in a single drum. When a washer dryer develops a fault, it can fail on either the washing or drying cycle. Drying problems usually involve clothes remaining damp, cycles that never seem to finish, or a complete lack of heat. These issues point to a failed heater element, a tripped thermostat, or a blocked condenser chamber that stops moisture from being extracted. On the washing side, machines might stop filling with water, fail to drain, or refuse to spin. Leaks are another issue, sometimes caused by a degraded door seal or a blocked pump filter. Control faults and error codes can also stop the machine from switching between its wash and dry functions. We look at the appliance to find out why it has stopped washing or drying, checking components from the water inlet valves and drain pumps to the heating elements and sensors. Please note that while we repair electric ovens and cookers alongside washer dryers, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs, or any gas appliance.

This usually means the machine is not producing heat or cannot extract moisture. A failed heating element or a tripped safety thermostat will stop the air from getting hot. Alternatively, a blockage in the condenser chamber prevents the appliance from removing water vapour from the drum during the drying phase.

Front leaks are heavily linked to the rubber door seal. Over time, the seal can degrade, tear, or become distorted by trapped items like coins or zips. If the seal is intact, the door hinge might be misaligned, or fluff from the drying cycle could be obstructing the glass bowl.

A machine will not spin if it cannot drain the water first. This is a safety feature to prevent flooding. The drain pump filter might be blocked with lint from the drying cycle or a stray object. If the filter is clear, the drain pump itself could be faulty or jammed.
