Homes in Fowey

Know the home, know the fault

With tourism providing over half the jobs and several entertainers keeping primary or secondary residences here, the local housing mix includes both year-round homes and holiday properties. This port town sits at the entrance to a flooded valley that creates a large natural harbour, and its history stretches back to well before the Norman invasion. In homes that are used seasonally, a wine cooler might be switched off for months and then expected to chill rapidly when guests arrive. This sudden demand can highlight underlying issues with the cooling system. A wine chiller that will not hold its set temperature is a standard fault. Dual-zone models rely on separate sensors, baffles and circulation fans to maintain different climates for red and white wines. If a fan motor fails or a temperature probe degrades, one zone might become too warm while the other operates normally. Condensation and misting on the glass door usually indicate that the magnetic door seal has split or flattened, allowing ambient air to mix with the chilled interior. Control faults can also prevent the compressor from engaging at all, leaving the cabinet at room temperature. Built-in models require adequate airflow around the base; restricted ventilation causes the compressor to overheat and shut down prematurely. Our domestic appliance repair service covers washing machines, washer dryers, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, fridge freezers, electric ovens, electric cookers, electric range cookers, electric and induction hobs, cooker hoods and microwaves. We do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Condensation and misting on the door usually happen when the magnetic seal degrades or splits. This lets warm room air enter the chilled cabinet. When the warm air meets the cold interior, moisture forms on the glass. Replacing the worn seal restores the airtight barrier and stops the misting.

Dual-zone models use separate circulation fans and temperature sensors to manage the different compartments. If a fan motor seizes or a sensor fails, the control board cannot regulate that specific area. This leaves one zone failing to hold the set temperature while the other compartment continues to chill normally.

Coolers not holding the set temperature can suffer from a faulty thermostat, a failing compressor, or poor ventilation. Built-in units need clear airflow to dissipate heat. If the vents are blocked, the compressor overheats and cuts out before the cabinet reaches the correct temperature, leaving your wine too warm.
