Homes in Fowey

Know the home, know the fault

Fowey is a port town at the entrance to a large flooded valley, with a history stretching back well before the Norman invasion. Properties range from older buildings near the seventh-century church to secondary residences owned by entertainers. Tourism provides over half the jobs in the area, meaning many houses serve as holiday lets or second homes. In these properties, built-in and combination microwaves see varied use, from occasional reheating by weekend visitors to heavy daily cooking during the peak summer season. A built-in microwave that stops heating can disrupt a holiday stay or a busy household routine. Built-in and combination models develop specific faults regardless of how often they are used. A microwave that runs but fails to heat the food is a standard issue, usually pointing to a failed magnetron, a blown high-voltage diode, or a faulty capacitor. Turntables that refuse to rotate can result from a burnt-out synchronous motor beneath the cavity floor or a broken drive coupling. Door latch and switch faults are also an issue; if the microswitches do not register the door as securely closed, the appliance will not start for safety reasons. Control panels and digital displays can become unresponsive, leaving the unit completely unusable. When we visit, we look at built-in and combination microwaves that will not heat or turn. We check the door latches, test the internal microswitches, and inspect the controls and displays. We do not work on gas appliances, but we repair electric cooking equipment in your home.

When a microwave sounds like it is working but the food stays cold, the magnetron or the high-voltage diode has usually failed. These components generate the microwave energy required for cooking. We test the internal high-voltage circuits to identify which part has stopped working when we look at built-in and combination models.

A turntable that will not turn is typically caused by a failed synchronous motor located under the floor of the microwave cavity. Alternatively, the plastic drive coupling that connects the motor to the glass tray might be cracked or broken. We inspect both the motor and the coupling during a repair visit.

Microwaves have multiple safety microswitches hidden inside the door latch mechanism. If the door hooks are damaged or a switch fails to register that the door is securely closed, the control board will prevent the appliance from starting. We check the latch assembly and test each switch during our visit.
