Know the home, know the fault
The settlement of Looe stretches along a steep river valley down to a sandy beach. Local housing includes older fishermen's houses built with living quarters upstairs and ground-level storage areas below. There is also a concentration of modern housing on the elevated land to the north, alongside a large number of holiday homes and guest houses. When freezers are kept in unheated ground-level storage, the ambient temperature can drop below the operating range of the appliance, stopping the compressor from running. In holiday properties, freezers might be switched off for long periods or left running empty, which changes how the cooling cycle operates. Upright and chest freezers need a stable internal environment to function. Heavy ice build-up occurs when warm air enters the cabinet, turning into frost on the evaporator coils. This ice eventually spreads, causing drawers to stick and reducing the available space. A split or flattened door seal allows this air leak to happen. If the appliance is not cold enough, temperature alarms will sound and the motor will run constantly to try and bring the temperature down. This points to a failure in the defrost system, a faulty thermostat or a problem with the sealed refrigerant circuit. We travel out to homes across the area, including properties around the Hannafore estate, to repair domestic appliances. During a visit, we look at upright and chest freezers that are not freezing or are icing up. The process involves inspecting door seals for gaps, testing the defrost heater and checking why temperature alarms are active. We evaluate the compressor and thermostat to understand why the unit is running constantly or failing to maintain a freezing temperature.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice builds up when warm air enters the freezer cabinet and condenses on the cold surfaces. A damaged or dirty door seal is the usual reason for this air leak. If the door is sealing correctly, the defrost heater or timer might have failed, preventing the appliance from clearing its own frost automatically.
A temperature alarm sounds when the internal climate rises above a safe freezing level. This happens if the compressor is failing, the thermostat is not reading the temperature accurately, or the lid has been left slightly open. The appliance will need to be inspected to find out exactly which component is at fault.
Drawers stick when heavy ice forms on the runners and shelves. This ice physically blocks the plastic drawers from sliding. Forcing them can crack the plastic. The underlying issue is an excess of moisture entering the cabinet, which points to a failing door seal or a broken automatic defrost system that needs attention.
