Know the home, know the fault

Situated in east Cornwall between Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, Callington has a rich history as both an agricultural market town and a highly significant nineteenth-century mining area. In any kitchen, an electric or induction hob is a central appliance. Cooking meals at home, perhaps using vegetables from the same local growers who supply regional food manufacturers, relies on a fully functioning cooking surface. When a hob stops working, preparing food becomes difficult. Electric and induction hobs develop specific faults as internal parts degrade. On a standard ceramic model, a heating zone might fail to glow because the element itself has broken, or the energy switch behind the dial has stopped sending power. Induction models operate differently, using copper coils to create a magnetic field. If the internal cooling fan fails or a sensor detects overheating, the appliance will display an error code and switch off to protect the circuitry. Touch controls can become completely unresponsive if moisture gets under the glass or if the main control board develops a fault. Another issue is a hob tripping the household electrics, which happens when a component shorts out or liquid reaches the internal wiring. We repair cooking appliances in customers' homes across the area. During a visit, we look at zones that will not heat, unresponsive touch controls, error codes, and units that switch off unexpectedly or trip the power supply. We work strictly on electric and induction models, so we do not repair gas hobs or any gas appliances.

Induction hobs have internal sensors that monitor temperatures and electrical currents. If a cooling fan fails or a pan boils over, the sensors detect the problem and shut the appliance down to protect the internal circuit boards. An error code appears on the display to indicate which specific component has triggered the shutdown.

A ceramic zone usually stops heating because the element under the glass has burned out and broken the electrical circuit. Alternatively, the energy regulator behind the control knob might have failed, preventing power from reaching the ring. We test the wiring and switches to find out where the power is being interrupted.

Touch controls rely on sensors mounted directly beneath the glass surface. If liquid boils over and seeps into the housing, it can interfere with the electronics. The control board itself can also develop a fault over time, meaning it no longer registers your fingers. We look at these panels during a repair visit.
