Know the home, know the fault

Situated in east Cornwall between Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, Callington is a former agricultural market town that expanded into a significant mining area during the nineteenth century. Proper ventilation is vital for vented machines in confined areas, while condenser models need enough ambient airflow to cool the heat exchanger and extract moisture effectively. When a dryer runs but does not heat, the heating element or the thermal overload cut-out has usually failed. A drum that will not turn points to a snapped drive belt, worn jockey wheels or a failing start capacitor on the motor. If a machine stops mid-cycle or will not start at all, the door catch mechanism or the main control board might be at fault. Condenser and water container faults happen when fluff blocks the pump or the float switch jams, tricking the machine into thinking the tank is full. Noisy running is another issue, generally caused by worn support rollers or drum bearings grinding as the heavy wet load spins. We travel out to repair appliances in customers' homes across the area, including trips out towards Kelly Bray. During a visit, we look at dryers that will not heat, turn or finish a cycle. We trace electrical faults, replace snapped belts, clear blocked condenser pumps and investigate noisy running. We repair washing machines, washer dryers, dishwashers, refrigeration and electric cooking appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

A dryer that spins without heating usually has a blown thermal cut-out or a faulty heating element. The cut-out is a safety device that trips if the machine gets too hot, which happens when fluff blocks the airflow. The element itself can also break down over time and stop generating heat.

The drive belt connecting the motor to the drum is the most likely culprit. When this belt snaps, you will hear the motor running but the drum will stay still. Alternatively, the motor start capacitor might have failed, meaning the motor lacks the initial power required to get a heavy load moving.

If the container is actually empty, the float switch mechanism inside the base of the machine is likely jammed with wet lint. The pump that pushes condensed water up to the drawer can also become blocked. This tricks the sensor into halting the cycle to prevent an overflow.
