Homes in Exeter

Know the home, know the fault

Exeter properties range from medieval, Tudor, and Georgian designs to the new town development of Cranbrook a few miles east of the boundary. With two university campuses bringing a large student population and domestic tourists visiting the area, washing machines in these homes work hard. A machine in a shared student house or a holiday let goes through more cycles than one in a standard domestic property, increasing wear on moving parts. The area sits on a river that widens into a flood plain and estuary, and while the city sits in the rain shadow of Dartmoor receiving less rainfall than other parts of the region, laundry still needs doing indoors during wet weather, placing extra demand on spin cycles. When a washing machine is used heavily, components will eventually fail. A drum that vibrates excessively or makes a loud rumbling noise on the spin cycle points to worn bearings or damaged suspension dampers. If a machine will not drain, the issue is usually a blockage in the pump filter or a failed drain pump motor. Heating faults, where the water remains cold, are caused by a blown wash heater element or a faulty temperature sensor. Leaks can develop from a degraded door seal, a split internal hose, or around the pump housing. A machine might also trip the electrics mid-cycle, which happens when water reaches an electrical component or an element shorts out. We travel to repair washing machines in places like Alphington. We diagnose machines that will not start, fill, spin, or drain in your home. During a visit, we look at door locks that will not engage or release, trace the source of leaks, and investigate error codes displayed on the control panel. We also repair washer dryers, tumble dryers, dishwashers, refrigeration, and electric cooking appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

A machine will usually abort the spin cycle if it cannot drain the water from the drum first. This happens when the drain pump is blocked by debris or the pump motor has failed. It can also occur if the machine detects an unbalanced load, which prevents the drum from spinning to protect the suspension.

The door interlock mechanism is designed to stay engaged while there is water in the drum. If the machine has not drained completely, the door will not open. Alternatively, the locking mechanism itself might have a mechanical fault, or the door handle could be snapped internally, preventing it from releasing the catch.

Leaks from the bottom of the appliance usually originate from the pump housing or internal hoses. A loose pump filter or a damaged seal around the filter will allow water to escape during a wash. Internal hoses connecting the dispenser drawer or drum to the pump can also split and leak water onto the floor.
